GO TO THE BOTTOM & START READING OUR ADVENTURE THERE. IT STARTS AT THE BOTTOM AND GOES UP. IT WILL MAKE MORE SENSE - START WITH 'DON'T DRINK THE WATER.'

after relaxing and reading for a couple of hours we got showered and cleaned up. then we walked down the beach to where the big day would be taking place. we enjoyed some guacamole, salsa, chips and a couple virgin pina coladas. we then went to find nicole getting ready in her room and our "work" began. jessica saved the day and did the brides hair. we rocked out to early 90's hip hop - you down with OPP? the bride and her girls relaxed with some jaeger and we were there to capture everything.

the bride, nicole, trained her dog, tess, to be a service dog and they were able to bring her on the plane. this was the MOST well behaved dog you will ever meet.

things were a little behind schedule. once things got started it was perfect, though we were losing light. tim and nicole were married at sunset. as nicole's dad was walking her down the aisle he was cracking jokes to keep her from crying. i love the shots of her laughing. nicole was a dream. she looked just stunning and radiated beauty. the lady marrying them talked a lot about some bear and some apache stuff, but it wasn't too bad. tess carried the rings tied to her flower collar. everything was a photographers dream.

by the time the ceremony ended the light was completely gone. there is a shot i wished i could have gotten, but i needed light for it. the mariachi band came over the hill and i wanted a shot of that with tim and nicole walking towards them. oh well. this is the shot i ended up getting, which was fine, but not quite what i wanted.

now the party began! we had a delicious dinner and danced the night away. as soon as we were off the clock we shook our groove thang.

jessica being the only single girl there, had her dance card full! even the adorable, matthew, asked her to dance. we captured the fun, the energy and the most amazing mariachi band in the world. they were like watching a broadway play. the rancho surprised the couple with fireworks, which scared tess. when the party was over we headed to the beach for a bon fire. it was warm and beautiful the fire dancing on the beach.

jessica was a great companion for this trip and a great help (even though she does not believe she was needed). after the bon fire, matthew, walked us back to our hotel and even carried my equipment. i think that was one of my favorite parts of having a hottie for an assistant, our things got carried, we got rides and people were always willing to help. as matthew and jessica sat outside talking i got to take a much needed hot shower and turned in for the night.

the next morning i had chili quiles (pronounced key-less) and jess had stuffed french toast. we shared breakfast with a sweetheart of a lady, susan. we hopped in the shuttle at 11am and we were off. we had a 2 hour layover in san francisco, where a flight attendant had dinner with us and again, our bags were carried. my hubby, blake picked us up from the airport at 10:20pm and our adventure had come to and end, in 30 degree weather.

the most perfect 24 hours.....

once tim picked us up our perfect 24 hours began. we decided to head over to the next town, todos santos - a cute art community. we were just over a mile from the main road. the owner of the surf motel, andy, said it was safe for a 6 year old girl to hitch hike in this area. he said to stick our thumb out and someone would be along in minutes to grab us. so that is what we did. we walked for probably 20 minutes or so when a farmer picked us up and brought us to the main road. i did not put much sunscreen on that day and all i could think about was buying a hat. we got to the bus stop and purchased our bus tickets, only to find out it would be almost another hour before a bus came. we really wanted to get back to pescadero by 5pm to see the sea turtles hatch and be released to the ocean. after much contemplation we decided to catch a ride to todos santos. a nice old man gave us a ride 6 miles up the road. benjamin, a somewhat attractive and drunk homeless man, hopped in the car with us. he was comical and we sung songs the whole way there. we said gracias and hopped out of the little car and headed to miguel's for some delicious mexican food. i ordered shrimp stuffed chili rellanos and jessica got the chicken mole. both were amazing. i do not normally order shrimp, but the locals raved about it. we then hoofed around town for the next couple of hours. i found my big rimmed hat i was looking for. we found a darling little book store and i bought my kids a book and a nativity. i also found the perfect gift for xmas for my mother in law. some outfits for my kids and a dress for my 2 year old cousin did the trick and i was done. jessica found a beautiful purse and bracelet. while walking around town i found a cool pub to put my catpalmer.com sticker on and asked one of the employees if it was ok. he put it up for me.

we had a good day shopping, looking at art and enjoying the town of todos santos. we took a bus back and it let us off in front of the dirt road. matthew, a local from todos santos, got off with us. he happened to be going to rancho pescadero for his first day of work. we stuck out our thumb and a family with a pickup truck stopped. we all hopped in the back with their kids and feed for the cattle. matthew was such a gentleman, helping us in and out of the truck. i am sure it had to do a lot with the fact that jessica is such a cutie. we made it back at 5:17pm just in time to see the last of the sea turtles being released.

the sun was setting as this little turtle made his way to the ocean. we enjoyed another picture perfect sunset and headed to go have dinner. i had a corn, masa and cheese stuffed chili rellano that was grilled (not fried) and it sat on a bed of avocado and tomatillo salsa. jessica got the pasole verde soup. we tried each other's and both were seriously amazing. so fresh and perfect. we ordered a mexican hot chocolate to go and walked along the beach about 1/2 mile to our surf motel. we drank the delicious hot cocoa and got cleaned up and sat up for a couple of hours chatting the night away. i read a little from my book, olive kitteradge, and went to sleep. now i have two babies at home, one 11 months and one 2 years of age. this was the BEST night sleep i had in almost 3 years. i did not get out of bed UNTIL 9AM!!!!! then i grabbed my book and headed out to our spot in between the palm trees, watched the whales and read. a truly perfect 24 hours. now we need to get focused on what we came to do. shoot a wedding!

we sat on the beach letting the warm breeze run over our faces. we watch the sunset. we ran holding hands joking around with how romantic it is and it is the two of us. jessica loves the silent sound in between waves. i love the feel of wet sand in my toes. we head back to the ranch. no sign of nicole, but tom has loosened up with a few drinks and is laughing and happy. we talk to the people there. we meet betty , nicole's grandmother who has made this long journey. she is a cutie. we talk to the employees. the people that work at rancho pescadero are unbelievably nice. karla is a sweet heart, marcos made sure we were taken care of and danny was so personable.

after a couple of hours we were headed to go check into our casitas at simpatica about 1/2 mile away on a dirt road. it was dark and there is no outdoor lighting. gary, the owner, and his cute doggie chica met us outside. after viewing three of the rooms we chose the 3rd one. it did not have real doors, but i quickly figured out a way to kind of secure them. it was charming. peacocks drawn on the walls, big plantation shutters on the windows, geckos crawling everywhere. there was not really much hot water and we had to do a trick to get it to work, but we were not worried. it was so warm there anyhow. as nicole was leaving she told me that a man crawled in their window last night and they were staying next door. this seriously made my heart jump. she said tim was asleep and she was getting out of the shower. she screamed at him and he left. she offered to take my equipment and i let her. i wanted it to be safe. i have pretty bad anxiety that i can usually keep under control. i used to be a lot worse than i am today. i looked underneath the blankets on the wall only to find holes for windows as big as your car windshield. only 2 of the 5 windows had shutters the rest were just open. we were on ground level. the man that broke in to their place had to climb up to the second level and remove a screen. i took 2 benadryl and put my passport and money in my pillow case. 4 hours later i was still wide awake. we had no mosquito net and were being attacked my a very loud shrilling mosquito. we would duck under the covers until it was too hot and come up for air for a few minutes until the bugger started attacking again. my breaking point was when something jumped up on our bed. it could have been the cat i saw earlier, maybe a big lizard or maybe jessica rolling over (haha) either way i got out of bed and called my husband. i was done. i needed sleep, bad. i think i fell asleep sometime after 2am. at 7am good ole gary was hammering away doing construction outside of our windows. i had sent an email (feeling like an annoying diva) to our sweet bride nicole letting her know we were checking out in the morning and i really needed rest. she was so understanding and for that i was thankful. just after 830am tim pulls up. i could have cried tears of joy. he did not know we were checking out. i hollered out to him to give us 10 min and we would be right out. he was there to take us to the market to buy some food. we threw everything in our bags, threw some clothes on and headed out. i was in such a hurry, i forgot to put on deodorant! (no beuno!) he saw our luggage and joked around, "are you guys checking out?" i said, "yes, we will tell you in the car." i hollered adios to dear gary and hopped in the car. we quickly explained to a very understanding tim. after we got some fresh tortillas and produce tim took us to check out the surf hotel ran by andy. it was perfect! the best part was it had windows AND doors that locked! pictured below is the surf motel.

we would sit there in between the palm trees in the morning reading books and watching the whales go by. as you can see there are not a lot of people around.

it was truly a piece of heaven. we were just a few steps from the warm ocean. once we got settled our perfect 24 hours begun.

i did not take these.

i feel blessed in many ways. my family, my hubby, my boys and getting to do what i love. shoot. december 1st my assistant, jessica, and i were flown to mexico to shoot a wedding for nicole and tim. nicole and tim are two of the coolest and most loved people you will ever meet. almost 50 people flew there to witness their big day.

our adventure started bright and early! i was up with my baby lucas till after midnight. so, when my alarm went off at 3am i was not ready. at 4am with a simply orange juice in hand we rolled out to the airport. my sweet hubby, blake took us to the airport. this was my first time traveling with a passport. the dozen of times i have been to mexico i did not need a passport and i am not the world traveler jessica is. as usual i was stopped by security at the slc airport, holding up the line. this is very normal for me to be treated like a terrorist. i stood there patiently as they radioed back and forth "what was that you said was on the female?" i wanted to tell her there is nothing but chubs under my dress, but i wanted to get through there quickly.

so, i had never been to this part of mexico and i was not sure what to expect. i was a little nervous about taking over $5,000 worth of equipment with me. a week before i left i was chatting with my sister. she said her husband was worried for my safety. i said that i was told it was a resort town and we would be fine. her husband informed her that 8 americans were just kidnapped from a resort town. but, my dear sweet and kind sister quickly reassured me that since i was a "bigger" girl that i did not have to worry because i was not the kidnapping type. she informed me that she would be the kidnapping type and so would my assistant, but not me. i guess fat girls don't get kidnapped. haha. it gave me a good laugh and lucky for her i am comfortable in my own skin.

we sat in the plane for about an hour while they de-iced the wings. i was sitting to a nice man. poor jess was sitting next to an ornery old lady. we got to denver, co with about 25 min to get to our connecting flight. we had to take a subway train to the next terminal and haul butt. there was quite the line to check in. they opened another line and we headed over there for faster service. we got a nice lady that was helping us check in and give us our new boarding passes. about 4 families next to us got checked in and we were still waiting. jessica politely asked, "is everything ok?" the lady responded, "yeah, i'm just slow." man, was she. we got on the plane with a few minutes to spare. and we were off!

we landed at 11:30 am in the beautiful, warm and sunny cabo. the thoughts of snow were far behind us. now the real adventure began. we needed to find tim's parents, tom & mary from chicago. we get our luggage and there are several guys asking if we need a taxi. i say" no we are waiting for friends to get us." they informed us that there is another terminal. we find out tim and mary are not coming in the same terminal we are. we get a ca to the next terminal, make a sign that reads 'tom and mary' and spend the next 90 minutes looking for them. in the midst of waiting we found out there is another exit. we split up looking for a guy with a big beer belly and a petite blonde woman. nothing. we were starting to wonder what we should do. luckily i had my trusty iphone on me and i went back and read an email nicole had sent me. it was right there saying to meet them at the bar. how could i have forgotten that!!!!! now i was worried these people had been sitting at the bar waiting for us for almost two hours. we hustled over there. nothing. hmmmmmm.....we were standing around when jessica over heard two ladies talking about provo and a wedding. turned out to be nicole's lovely mother, janet. it felt good that we found someone, but still not the right people. then, in walks mary. she recognizes my bright red hair instantly. apparently tom and mary were held up in customs and then went straight to get their rental car. it was a relief that they had not been waiting for us the entire time. tom is waiting in the car. he is hot and not pleased with mary. we end up following janet, thank goodness! tom is silent the entire 2 hour car drive. we are not sure what to think or say. mary on the other hand is saying some dang funny things. we are at a stop light and there is a bar called 'la playita'. mary looks at it and says "that must be a day care". i could not bite my tongue anymore and i say, "yeah, where they serve corona." there are beer signs all over la playita. mary laughs and says, "well maybe that is how they keep their kids in line."

we finally get to pescadero. it is a small town with not much around. we turn on a dirt road and head west for about a mile. we pass several organic farms. then there it is rancho pescadero. a bit of heaven. first we see the sunflowers and then the garden.

we pull up to this beautiful resort. nicole and her sweet dog, tess, greet us. we are exhausted and thankful when we are able to relax and order some food. we had no idea what we were in for. the food was spectacular and i cannot describe in words the flavors or freshness. i ordered fish tacos - fish caught earlier that day! jessica got chicken enchiladas with a side salad (fresh from the garden). nicole says she will be back in a little bit and goes to tend to some of her friends. jess and i head past the palm tree groves down to the beach. this is what we see......

amber 1996 vs. 2006

amber was and is a beautiful girl i went to high school with. in 1996, my senior year, we went off to the circle of orange to goof around and take photos. a little boy thought she was gwen stefani. it was cute and he gave her some flowers. the man on the bench was a random man, we did not know him.

in 2005, one of my fans said i should find her and do a shoot 10 years later. i was in luck, in 2006 she was living in LA (instead of new york like she had been). i was visiting family and we got together and shot at some of the same locations in the circle of orange. i think it would be fun to do another shoot in 2016 - 20 years after the first.

my first exhibit at cup of joe on 200 south in 2004 was of the original shoot. instead of the metal shelving i am known for it was framed in piping and plexi glass. it proved to be very expensive and i could not continue framing it that way. amber was so easy to work with!

spoon & squid 1997

in 1997 i was getting ready to graduate high school in villa park, california. for a couple of months i spent my saturdays in hollywood. my friends ethan and adam would sometimes come with me. one saturday as adam and i were leaving we met these two characters, spoon and squid. i wanted to photograph them, they wanted money. it was a good exchange. when i got to class on monday one of the cheerleaders in my class opened up my film canister i was getting ready to develop. she felt terrible and said she would replace my film. i didn't want the $1.50 my film cost, i wanted my photos of the homeless punk-rockers. i tracked down spoon and squid at the shelter they often stayed at and they agreed to meet up again.

this time i video taped them for hours and shot several rolls of black and white film. they were funny and drunk most of the time. spoon was 19 and had lived on the streets from age 15 when her dad left to get cigarettes and never returned. squid was 23 and he had been married before and had a kid he never saw.

after graduating high school i soon lost touch with them. i went on my travels of the north west and hawaii. while in san francisco i met some other punk rockers. i was making a documentary of our trip interviewing people on the streets of my travels. i made mention that these two reminded me of spoon and squid back in LA. they were excited that i knew spoon and squid since they were friends of theirs. small world.

a year goes by. i am dating blake palmer. we head out to riverside county to see a mxpx show. as i am using the restroom next door a very familiar punk rock girl comes in. i tell her that i remember her from san fran a year earlier. she remembers me and asks if i have heard about spoon and squid. i had not. apparently spoon walked in on squid cutting another girl's hair, got jealous and stabbed squid to death with the scissors.

6 months go by. i am now married to blake palmer. we are hanging out in a vintage clothing shop my friend damian managed in huntington beach. damian knows of my love for documentaries and shows me a flyer for 'decline of a western civilization part 3' -i recognize the photo of a bunch of punks to be spoon and squid. turns out about the same time i was filming them they were also being filmed for part three of a series penelope spheris did. they were 2 of the main characters. i went and saw the film. spoon did in fact kill squid and she was serving time in LA county jail at the release of the film. sad ending to the sad life they both had. what i found interesting was that all the punks in the film were asked where they saw themselves in 10 years and they all responded, "dead."
